FLEETSense Customer Unlocks Instant Fuel Savings

Integrated fuelcard and telematics solution helps cut fuel costs by more than eight per cent

Discover how one FLEETSense customer unlocked instant fuel savings…

An innovative fuel and driver management solution from TomTom Telematics and BP has helped specialists Corporate Solutions Logistics cut fuel costs by 8.1 per cent.

FLEETSense began working with Corporate Solutions Logistics  in 2014 introducing TomTom Telematics and Tracking. Working closely with the Birmingham-based company, which provides bespoke temperature controlled and ambient distribution services, FLEETSense then introduced BP FleetMove Pro across its 100-strong HGV fleet in June 2017.

In parallel FLEETSense has also helped to implement Maxoptra from Magenta Technologies, as well as Vehicle Cameras, helping the client to benefit from improved Insurance Policies resulting from closer monitoring and development of Driver Behaviour.

The new integrated system combines BP fuel card information with vehicle location, fuel consumption, driver behaviour and vehicle maintenance data from WEBFLEET, TomTom Telematics’ fleet management solution.

This provides full visibility and control over how fuel is being used across the entire fleet in one, easy-to-use interface.

Instead of checking thousands of individual fuel card transactions manually every year, the company now receives fuelcard exception reports. These highlight at a glance if there is an anomaly that might indicate fraudulent card use, such as when a fuel card transaction and vehicle location do not match.

WEBFLEET’s integral OptiDrive 360 functionality meanwhile – which gives drivers in-cab feedback and advice on a number of key indicators affecting fuel efficiency, including speeding, idling, sudden braking and harsh steering – has helped improve fleet mpg by 9.2 per cent.

In addition, weekly fuel consumption reports have highlighted a clear correlation between fuel wastage due to idling and number of accidents, triggering targeted driver training.

Corporate Logistics Solutions‘We’re delighted with the results,’ says Stuart Payne, Commercial Director at Corporate Solutions Logistics. ‘Combining different streams of data in this way makes everyone’s life easier, helping us to save time and reduce operating costs.’

Further benefits to the company include WEBFLEET alerts from the vehicle’s four-camera CCTV system, helping to plug any evidence gaps for future insurance claims.

Scheduled integration with the incumbent routing and scheduling system means the company will soon be able to send drivers directions to the most appropriate BP stations on each route to help them get the best fuel deals.

If your transport business could benefit from direct bottom-line saving on fuel, contact us today to find out how we can help this happen.

Company Car Tracking

Tracking Your Company Cars

See how this simple solution could reduce your costs and increase profits

Vehicle Tracking, now known more accurately as Vehicle Telematics, has evolved rapidly over recent years. So has adoptions across a range of fleet types and sises.

It wasn’t that long ago that using clever hardware and smart software was only really of use for businesses running large fleets of HGV vehicles.

As with almost all facets of technology, the pace of change, development and use has accelerated over recent years. We’ve seen these vehicle tracking systems get smarter, more accurate and provide more features.

At the same time, we’ve also seen the technology get smaller and more cost efficient. This has meant that the advantages of this technology have become far more accessible to smaller businesses and those running smaller fleets; in some cases, just one or two vehicles.

Now, as we enter 2018, here at FLEETSense we’re seeing more interest and enquiries from clients for Company Car Tracking.

As you’ll know doubt be aware, there are important rules and regulations that are applied to businesses running company vehicles and these apply equally to company cars, not just vans and trucks.

In addition to the legislation about company vehicles, there are also other obligations and responsibilities that employers need to observe in regards to staff and this includes those driving company cars.

And yes, this would include you, even if you’re the Company Director, driving ‘your own’ company car.

Company Car Tracking – Multiple Reasons Why

Essentially there are three main reasons why you should be tracking your company cars:

Cost Savings and Efficiency –

The costs of running company cars can be significant. It’s not just the leasing costs, or the fuel actually consumed, but also service and maintenance, insurance, etc.

Company car TrackingEvery mile travelled incurs a cost and wasted journeys, poor route planning and time management can multiply your lost profits. Multiply this by even a small number of company cars, over months, and you’re looking at a huge amount of waste. Quite simply, your money down the drain.

Company Car Tracking isn’t just about saving costs, it’s about getting your people to the right place at the right time. Meaning better time management and higher output.

Drivers’ Safety and Your Responsibilities –

Your legal responsibilities cannot be ignored. In a world that is far more litigious, where employers can more easily be sued, the risks are higher. No matter how large or small your operation is, you need to protect it. That’s why smart business owners, the successful ones, know it’s important to cover the bases.

Financial Management and Accounting –

The last of these three aspects may certainly not considered the least important. It’s incumbent on all business owners/directors/managers to meet the legal requirements of financial record-keeping.

Death and taxes are the two inevitable of life, as we all know. So HMRC is going to expect and demand that you’re keeping up with good record keeping and accurately reporting how your company vehicles are being used, as so being taxed correctly.

Being able to easily extract fact-based evidence and reporting for the use of company vehicles is not only going to save you time and money, it’s also going to prove that you’re taking these responsibilities seriously.

Break-Even and Return On Investment

Finally, there’s one cornerstone that we are able to present that cements the case we’re putting forward here; Return on Investment (ROI).

As a business that specialises in working with clients to save money and improve profits, we start from a position of aiming for positive ROI. Thankfully we have a broad portfolio of multiple clients who have been able to clearly evidence the value of investment in tracking.

Starting with a simple review (an initial telephone conversation can get the ball rolling), we’re able to look at your business and specific use of company vehicles and identify if company vehicle tracking will be a benefit to you. We’re also able to look at a range of options that might be approrpiate to your business; this could include leasing tracking hardware.

Even within a few months you’ll be in a position to identify how adopting this technology is saving you money and driving up efficiency. Depending upon the type of business and application we often see our clients cross the break-even point within just a few months and then go on to rack up monthly savings ongoing.

Simple Next Steps – Making An Informed Decison

As you will hopefully understand by now, we’re not just any other tech reseller. We consider ourselves as specialists (we think we’ve earned that badge) and, most importantly, partners with our clients.

Our job is to give you clear, honest and practical advice, where we can make recommendations, based on solid experience. It’s also about working with you and your business. We often work with clients who want to test out solutions like tracking, perhaps on just a few vehicle first, so they can evidence the benefits before expanding the fleet roll-out.

As a small a dedicated team, we’re offering our time and knowledge to help you find out if company car tracking could be right for you. This start with a conversation. We’re happy to book telephone time, offer an online interactive demonstration, or arrange a site visit to learn more about your set-up and operation, look at your needs and then make sensible recommendations.

So… if the time is right, especially at the start of the new year (and in preparation for the next tax year), we’d relish the challenge of finding out how we can help you.

telematics system

Is your Telematics System an unused gym membership?

Is your Telematics System an unused gym membership?

Getting more from your Tracking and Telematics could be easier than you think

Republished from TomTom Telematics – Matthew Vass – All rights acknowledged

Exercise is great for our health so it should be easy just to go out and do some…. right?

Yet I’m one of the countless Brits who waste a combined £5.8bn every year on unused fitness equipment – everything from gym memberships to my spotlessly clean mountain bike.

Last year I stopped jumping from one fad to another, sat down and really thought about what I was doing.

I wanted to maintain my weight under 100kg, increase my upper body strength and build my cardio fitness. The real shocker though, was realising why I had failed. I don’t like exercising alone, I get bored with repetition, I bought a top gym package which I didn’t need and I haven’t a clue how to lift weights properly.

Finally awake, I began researching and started CrossFit. The workouts are in groups, every day is different, qualified coaches attend every session and regular classes fit around work. The result is that I began to enjoy exercise and started seeing the benefits.

Getting a grip on fleet fitnesstelematics system

So why is this relevant to your telematics system?

A survey in the US conducted by FleetAnswers.com asked 103 fleet professionals about the telematics system they use. When it came to the question of return on investment (ROI), 31 per cent said they didn’t have any and 34 per cent didn’t know.

So how has this situation arisen? Well, despite the obvious business benefits that can be achieved with the help of telematics, simply investing in a system isn’t enough. Like fitness programmes, you can end up wasting significant sums of money if you don’t give serious thought to what your business actually needs and how that system will help you achieve your goals.

This means it is important to outline your priorities before investing in a system and identify what issues affect your business.

If fuel usage is perceived as being high then it would make sense to find a system that allows driver behaviour to be monitored and assessed, providing clear KPIs for improvement. If productivity is an issue, it may be worth looking at a telematics platform that integrates with routing and scheduling software to allow the creation of smarter schedules, helping to optimise routes and get drivers to jobs on time.

Data holds the key to improvement

However, choosing the appropriate system is only the first step.

Even if the data provided by a telematics system is appropriate to need, change can only be achieved through proper use of that data.

This means it is important to speak to providers up front to determine what data is provided by each system and how that data might be used to help achieve the necessary improvements within your fleet.

If a plan isn’t laid out in advance, it is possible businesses may simply become overfaced by the variety and detail of the data provided by the system and will end up using none of it.

If your organisation employs a large number of drivers, do you have the necessary resource to process and analyse the available data? Even if such resource is scarce, data can be made more manageable if the telematics system is able to segment it into different reports.

For example, some systems can provide high-level, colour-coded charts to highlight general trends within your fleet, allowing you to quickly identify the overriding issues and then delve deeper into the data in order to identify root cause, perhaps in the performance of individual drivers.

Equally, smart software integrations can use telematics data to help enhance existing processes, such as routing and scheduling, without creating a greater administrative burden. Automated processes can help to cut down on the need for paperwork and manual record-keeping.

Whatever the challenges, it is a case of business leaders being 100 per cent clear and transparent on current and future needs, and setting a clear plan of action for use of a telematics system.

For their part, providers must be clear about what their products offer and provide the kind of ongoing support that is necessary to help customers get the most out of the technology.

Discover objective advice on how to improve fleet performance by speaking to an approved Partner of TomTom Telematics to find out how you could be getting more.

telematics in the construction industry

Telematics Drives Construction Industry

Telematics Driving the Construction Industry

Part 1 of an Industry Review From FLEETSense

– The Fleet Management Specialists

The UK construction industry has enjoyed a period of growth over recent years and the trend continues upwards. Despite the effects of recent economic challenges the building and construction sector is once again finding growing opportunities.

As with so many other sectors, transport plays a major role and whether it is a small building firm working on a modest housing development, or a large civil engineering firm delivering a major infrastructure project, transport is critical.

There are 5 key areas that relate to transport and logistics needs within the construction industry –

Efficiency –

For any business to operate effectively it needs to be efficient. The simple economics of cost reduction are an easy way to add direct profits to the bottom line.

Waste is an issue for all of us and today the pressures to control and minimise waste are not just focused on lost revenues. We also need to accept a larger, perhaps moral, perspective on the issue of waste. And this is especially the case when considering sustainability of resources and our need to protect the environment.

Being able to manage fleet transport in an effective way is paramount to controlling costs and reducing waste.

Safety –

Perhaps more than other, it is the construction industry that presents the highest safety risks to employees, staff and even the general public.

By the very nature of the business the transportation of construction-related materials is a big job. Often requiring big solutions and a careful observance of the need to maintain the highest levels of safety is critical.

The transport industry also has a high level requirement for attention to safety matters. Large vehicles, travelling for many hours, sometimes on challenging routes, all adds up to bigger safety considerations with higher risks.

Compliance –

The construction industry is very much led by the need to observe and be compliant of rules and regulations. Many of these are obvious and accepted as part of good safety and best practice.

Once again, the transport industry also has stringent legislation that requires full compliance, or results in the costs and penalties imposed. Costly penalties are a unwanted and unnecessary drain on bottom line profits.

When combined, the supply of logistics within the construction means a high regard for compliance and the avoidance of costly penalties.

Security –

The transportation of construction materials in large scale can present some major security issues. High value loads need protection and monitoring.

While the financial losses of lost or damaged loads represent one issue there are others. The security of personnel and staff is another key area that needs attention. As goods, materials and people function within the construction industry there is a need for traceability and accountability.

Security matters are not just the result of deliberate or even criminal intent; they are also about asset protection, thinking and planning ahead, so reducing risks and costs.

Responsibility

Corporate and Social Responsibility, even Environmental Responsibility; today, more than ever before, the construction industry has the need to meet the expectations (and legal demands) of the communities in which it operates.

More than this, responsibility is best practice. It reduces risk, increases better and safer work environments and can still become a cost-positive aspect of any business. Consumers demand ethical suppliers and constructors.

As technology advances, in particular in the field of communications and data management, a number of powerful resources are now becoming increasingly popular in the construction industry.

Fleet Management, Work-Flow and Job Scheduling are now all fundamental to the daily routine of all transport operations. With the clear and simple aim of achieving more, sometimes with less, in the most effective and efficient manner possible.

That’s why we have seen an explosion of interest and engagement in vehicle Telematics and Fleet Management solutions over recent years.

And in Part 2 of this Industry Review we’ll be looking at how this is happening now and where the opportunities are for the future.

If you operate a vehicle fleet within the Construction industry, now could be the right time to take a close look at how effective technology can drive real savings and boost your profits.

Dudman Group Case Study

Construction Firm Embraces Technology

The Dudman Group Finds £44,000 of Savings

TomTom Telematics Combined with AllOnMobile EPOD

Originating as a haulage business, the Dudman Group of Companies has grown and adapted with the industry into a large, independent group that is an owner/operator of quarries, wharves, recycling centres and a large truck operator supplying and serving the construction industry in the South of England.

Working across the South coast with a haulage fleet of 45 vehicles including rigid & artic tippers, concrete mixers and road sweepers; the company operates out of depots across Sussex and Hampshire. The Dudman Group of Companies prides itself on being an independent aggregate producer, concrete supplier and bulk haulier that offers the widest range of products possible, catering for any development or construction venture.

The Dudman Group of Companies has installed the TomTom Telematics fleet management solution into 25 of the 45 vehicle fleet. All of the equipped vehicles are also using the ruggedised TomTom PRO 8275 7″ driver terminal, which on top of standard TomTom features allows for third-party apps to be developed to add functionality.

In addition to the ability to install third party apps on the PRO 8275 driver terminal, it comes equipped with a truck specific map, ensuring all routes are HGV suitable. TomTom Traffic data means drivers can avoid traffic delays and increase productivity. The device is ruggedised for use in harsh conditions.

The third party software chose is supplied by AllOnMobile (AOM) which allows for the reduction of paper based processes through development of online forms and includes daily vehicle checks, job scheduling and signature capture. Loading times at all company sites are less, allowing the driver to leave once checked and there is no longer the need to wait for a paper ticket to be produced.

The new AOM e-ticket software has ensured that all loads delivered conform to the Weights & Measures & QSRMC standards and provides customers with a digital copy of the signed ticket by email or text. This system is linked to the Dudman Group of Companies website which customers can use to access information of their ticket.

Since implementing the TomTom Telematics solution and AOM application, the Dudman Group of Companies has calculated an outstanding saving of £44K per year on employee and operational efficiency and paper form administration.

Based on this level of savings, the capital expenditure required to purchase and install the solution will be repaid within the first 18 months of operation.
