FLEET Vehicle Tracking and Telematics
Take control of your Fleet with advanced navigation, location tracking and route scheduling
The yellow and red livery of Jack Richards & Sons is a familiar sight on roads of East Anglia and far beyond. One of the region’s largest hauliers, this Road Transport business has been serving the logistics needs of clients since 1956. Starting out with one five-ton Bedford truck Jack began his endeavours in Cambridge, later relocating to its current base in Fakenham.
Today, this independent and family-run business is a multi-million pound turnover operation, with a fleet of 260 Tractor units and 500 curtainside trailers.
In this case study we find out from Dominic Purslow, Depot Principal, how their commitment to the best driving standards led them to form a trusted partnership with FLEETSense, independent and leading fleet management specialists.
“So much has changed over recent years on the UK’s roads. As other hauliers and private road users will recognise, we’ve seen significant increases of traffic and the issues this causes” Dominic told us.
“The quality and reliability of our service to our customers has always been paramount. At the same time however, we also focus on the safety and security of our drivers.
“And it’s in this area we’ve sought to protect our team members, assets and our business”.
Jack Richards recognised both the need and value of fitting vehicles with cameras; to help provide a way of collecting evidence in the event of road issues and collisions, as well as spurious and even malicious insurance claims.
“Road rage prevention and protection is key for us these days. We’ve witnessed a shocking rise in incidents that not only put our drivers in the firing line but can also cause costly losses to our business.”
Having already trialed one alternative supplier option for vehicle cameras Jack Richards felt they needed something more, with greater control, accuracy and reliability. This requirement was closely bound by the need for solid value for money.
Jack Richards wanted to find a camera system that gave all-round visibility, high-quality recording and security of evidence. This brief also included the need for in-cab cameras that could provide protection to drivers in the event of criminal attacks and road rage assaults.
“We take the personal security of our most valued asset, our drivers, very seriously. So installing in-cab cameras was an obvious requirement. At the same time and in respect of the need for privacy for our drivers, we wanted a system that was not active when drivers are at rest”.
As with all FLEETSense clients, the brief needed to be met by a proposition that represented true value for money and a quality of after-sales service that ensured maximum ongoing benefit.
As an independent consultancy FLEETSense has the distinct benefit of directly matching needs with solutions. With a whole-of-market freedom to choose from, FLEETSense is not tied by particular manufacturers and suppliers.
Rather, the business always works from a position of Best Advice and Recommendation.
FLEETSense was able to match these client’s needs with an advanced modular system of five cameras, all with live view.
This provides instant access to incident footage, covering all angles, including from the driver’s cab.
With initial test systems installed and running it wasn’t long before this would be put to the test. Just two weeks into the trial the vehicle was involved in a road incident.
Despite conflicting witness statements the video evidence was undeniable and the matter was resolved quickly as a result.
With the trial complete the first phase of system installation extended to multiple vehicles and Jack Richards have now committed to rolling this out in stages across their fleet.
More than just a method of increasing security and safety, the decision to fit vehicles cameras also forms part of the focus on Driver Development at Jack Richards.
“We take driver standards very seriously. We even have a dedicated and full-time Driver Training Department” Explained Dominic Purslow.
“Now we have the additional benefit of video camera footage to help us with this. This means we can support drivers and help them to maintain good driving behaviour, which covers areas of safety as well as fuel efficiency and reducing vehicle wear.”
Clearly the benefits of fitting quality Vehicle Cameras systems are many. But how do we know what supplier and equipment to choose?
As dedicated consultants and not just ‘box-shifters’, FLEETSense has proven value in finding the right solution for each customer and their needs. As a business operating nationally, with over 400 live client relationships, we able to access best pricing and offer deals to match. “We’ve always been more about building on-going relationships than just selling stuff, unlike so many of our competitors” says Tom Dickerson, Managing Director of FLEETSense. “And I think we’ve successfully proven that over the past decade. Customers often come to us for one specific need, then go on to take advantage of our experience in addressing other issues, be that tracking and route-scheduling, work-flow management, or other aspects of their operation”.
This approach has clearly been a perfect fit for Jack Richards. Winning a new client and meeting their expectations is not just about ‘customer satisfaction’ but rather ‘customer-excellence’. “Whenever we select a supplier we’re looking for something special and different. We’re looking for a truly personal service that genuinely puts our needs and desires at their priority” Dominic explained. “Honestly, among the many things we like about working with FLEETSense is the fact that this is a self-made business, passionate about what they do. We don’t think of them as suppliers now but rather as our Partners, they understand us and we trust them to give us good advice and the best deal.”
Based in Dereham, West Norfolk, FLEETSense works with clients nationwide, has award-winning partnerships with global brands, such as TomTom Telematics, and also works closely with tech developers who are creating solutions to meet the current and future needs of the UK transport industry and beyond.
